It’s just after Christmas and I’m zipping around the streets of Palm Beach Florida Porsche hunting. Palm Beach is a glorious mix of people-watching, stuffy high class living and Porsche spotting.
I have to be careful while I drive because I’m taking photos with one hand and steering with the other, this becomes challenging when I see a great looking Porsche 911 go by.
At one point I’m pulling out of a grocery store and I have to act fast, one minute there’s a Porsche Carrera GT being valet parked next to me, and before I know it I’m pulling away because I see a classic black Porsche 911 SC in an alleyway across the road. Everything else falls is forgotten. My body goes into overdrive and I’m charmed rubbing my eyes as if I’m seeing a mirage. I’m not. I drive directly towards it, my heart racing. It’s a gorgeous black Porsche 911 SC and I’m going to meet the owner.
I hear the engine running as I approach and take a moment to and listen to it, it hums like a champ. The owner has his head under the hood, I wonder if he is putting shopping bags in it like the owner of the Porsche 993 I met in Vero Beach last week, but he isn’t. He’s checking the fuses and tucking the carpeting back in around the fuse box. He’s being meticulous. “What year is it?” I ask, “It’s an 83′” he says. I can tell he’s a Porsche lover by the way he’s going over this thing with a fine tooth comb, checking every little bit, it’s honorable.
He’s the second owner and bought it twenty years ago off a cartoonist who, at the time requested Porsche add the Cranberry interior that was previously discontinued after 1982. I poke my head inside the open window and see just how incredible the color is. It’s like a womb and I feel as if I’m about to faint. A little voice inside says: the Cranberry red contrasts the black exterior perfectly…I must be in some kind of Porsche heaven!
I asked if I could take some photos and do a full walk-around so can shoot some video of the Porsche 911 SC. He obliges and tells me this is the first time all year he had the car out and apologized for it not being in pristine condition. I hardly notice trying to contain my excitement, which isn’t very contained because I’m hopping back and forth with enthusiasm asking him about every inch of this gorgeous Porsche.
I could tell he looks after his Porsche, he was brimming with pride as he spoke about it. Like you do about a first born. He said he practically raised his kids in this car. His son walks over and joins us “I’m trying to convince him to get another Porsche” he says. I told him I thought he had the right idea and that maybe if he was lucky his father would give him the Porsche 911SC when he buys a new one. He seemed to like that idea very much.
As I was snapping shots I was beginning to wonder whether it was all going to end where I wake up in my bed shaken out of a dream, so I snap a few more just for good measure. Every angle, every detail of this car is perfect. I have to say however that I’m a little embarrassed I can’t remember the father or son’s name, they were extremely grateful to offer their story behind it and tell me a bit about themselves…I do hope if they are reading this article and if they are please forward me your info.
All I can say is thank you. Your Porsche 911 was without a doubt the highlight of my trip to Palm Beach. Thanks so much for sharing your Porsche story.
