I’m a Porsche purist and when I see Porsche becoming a competitor for top rated SUVs by adding a new vehicle to their lineup, while offering a more accessible price point, I start to wonder whether Porsche is selling out. So I compared the Macan to the rest of the Porsche line-up, and the deeper I got the more i underestimated. The Macan is not just another new 4 door Porsche SUV, or what Porsche are calling: a 5 door sports car. It’s another level.
Porsche is known for their performance and design, and in the compact SUV category you could say they are now known for surprise. Porsche calls the Macan “A sports car that makes you feel alive” and after doing some research I began to see where they focused their energy.
Okay I’ll admit I was a Porsche fan at birth and you had me at sports car, but does it come with a Porsche price tag? For those looking for the best small suv 2014 don’t shy away from a premium brand, the Porsche Macan S has a great price point if you simply want in. And if you want a Porsche SUV but aren’t willing to fork out top dollar for a Cayenne – one of the top rated SUVs in my opinion – the flood gates have just opened.
You’ve got two options, the Macan Turbo and the Macan S. The turbo with it’s 3.6 twin-turbo V6 engine has 400hp at 6000rpm, and zero to 60mph in 4.4 sec. Which sounds like a sports car to me. And for $72,300 you can get in.
If that price irks you the Macan S still has 340 hp at 5500-6500rpm and goes zero to 60 in 5.2 sec – in my mind that’s still a sports car. It comes in at $49,900 which might be the push you need to get behind the wheel.
Here is how the two models are described by Porsche, in that token lofty language that suckers me in every time:
Must intensity really have limits? If so, then we have at least redefined them for design, performance and exclusivity.
The “S” principle has a long tradition at Porsche. It embodies a particularly sporty manifestation of an idea. It provides thrills and goose bumps – and dispenses with anything that does not necessarily serve the spirit of sport.
Is it the bastard child of Porsche? I think not.
